Adding to my Stash

I love getting packages in the mail…..my yarn arrived!

I have been promising H that I would make him this hat. But have not been entirely confident and comfortable with my pattern reading abilities and my ability to keep gauge consistent.  Over the summer I became more confident through my circular knitting projects (my monster series) and I feel up to the challenge of making the “Jug Head Hat” pattern by the “dominknitrix” Jennifer Stafford .  H had bought me her book when I first started to knit.  All the projects in it have been inspiring for me to keep up the craft no matter how frustrated I get.  Her projects are awesome, just my punky style.

I ordered & received 3 skeins each of two different colors of Rowan DK Pure wool yarn- green and black. I figured since I found the DK stuff online I would order extra anticipating making gloves/mittens to match someday.

The color is “Glade”

I have already made one swatch and think I have the gauge down.  It is in the wash at the moment so I can see how the stitched piece reacts to being washed.  I want to re-read, re-read and again re-read the pattern as well as practice a few of the patterns instructions before I actually cast on, especially – wrap, turn stitch –   and the – provisional cast on- both of which I have never done before.  If all goes well and I can squeak out some “me” time I will cast on before the end of the weekend.

I am off to wind my skeins into nice round manageable balls.

Three Eyed Three Horned Flying Hot Pink Hot Tamale Eater

AKA – TETHFHPHTE

It is complete and ready to fly over to a special young lady for her June Birthday!

I started a lime green creature on my trip to Atlanta.  Yes, I did manage to get my knitting needles through TSA Security.  My advice to traveling knitters is to carry bamboo needles with point stoppers on them (see the TSA website).  As well it is best to also have a self addressed stamped manilla envelope ready just in case they don’t let you carry them onboard the plane (also on the TSA website), I weighed all my yarn an needles at home to be sure it would make a safe return to me, this way you won’t lose your work, you can just mail your work back to yourself.   I didn’t even think about attempting to get scissors on the plane, just borrowed some from the hotel when I got to Atlanta.

So, the new lime green guy’s body is nearly at the stuffing stage.  I am sure having a lot of fun whipping out these creative little creatures!

TETHFHPHTE Progress to date….

May 23, 2008 at 9:15 pm (Extraordinary Things in an Ordinary Life) (, , , , , , , , , )

Hee, Hee, Hee….. cannot wait for my niece to meet it!

I added wire to the horns so you can mould and sculpt them.

I hope to work on the wings this weekend.  The wing yarn is a fuzzy “fun fur” purple.

The best part of all is I made it a chain link leash with fun little charms! ( Oh, the craft store is a very dangerous place!)

Stay tuned for more pics over the weekend!

It’s Alive

Three Eyed Three Horned Flying Hot Pink Hot Tamale Eater…..

Unlike my post the other day these pics do the hot pink “watermelon” color justice!  Quite vivid!

This guy has a lot more butt than the OEOHFPPE, it can stand up on it’s own!

I am in the process of designing wings, and hope to have it’s three eyes, a tail and hair on it by the end of the day.  I am thinking green hair and purple wings.  As well I plan on making legs/feet, well, maybe, we’ll see.

I think I overstuffed it a bit, it seems to be bursting at the seams.  I hope that over time and usage it will relax a little.  My stitches are getting better, more uniform, but I can still see many imperfections that I’ll have to work on (I tried to hide them all in the pics).

Maybe after a few more trial runs for friends & family I can perfect my stitching.  It keeps getting suggested to me that I sell my creatures/monsters.  It is a good idea, but stitching them well enough to sell seems like a lot of pressure.

Stay posted for more news on the metamorphosis of the TETHFHPHTE.

A few things that have been keeping me busy…

May 14, 2008 at 8:04 pm (Extraordinary Things in an Ordinary Life) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

And why I have not been blogging so much-

Tradition in the house dictates that the 7 year old young lady must design, make and decorate a cake for Mother’s Day for her Mum.  This is how I spend my Saturday…..

I think she has been watching too much “Ace of Cakes” on the food network, one of her favorite shows.  I had to be sure to point out to her that we do not have a means of making or acquiring fondant, so food coloring dyed frosting was going to have to do.  It was fun, and a lot of work, but was a hit with Mum and tasted quite yummy (chocolate cake with vanilla frosting!

As well I have picked up my needles and started working on the One Eyed One Horned Flying Purple People Eater’s Sibling, the Three Eyed Three Horned Flying Hot Pink Hot Tamale Eater……  It is for my niece, she said her favorite color was hot pink, so I hope she will be excited to receive my latest creation for her birthday.  (Obviously it is still a work in progress and inside out, I hope to have the body stuffed by the weekend so I can start working on legs and wings)

Yes, that is my skull & crossbones “Not your grandma’s knitting bag”  on one side and my ibook on the other next to the incomplete TETHFHPHTE.  My camera does not do justice to the color of this yarn, it is named “watermelon” and I am not sure why because it is practically an iridescent shiny neon pink.  I know something on this creature is going to be lime green, not sure if it should be the hair or the wings.  What do you think?  I’ll keep you posted on the progress of the creature as it metamorphoses into a stuffed being.
